Modern times, which began around the 15th to the 16th century and reach into the present day, began with profound changes, especially from a European point of view. The boundaries of this era to the Middle Ages included the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, the invention of printing, the discovery of the New World and America, and the Reformation begun by Martin Luther.
In the second half of the 17th century heavy armor and helmets largely lost their usefulness and effect. Most helmets of this era were open, lighter versions of their predecessors. There were helmet types such as the Morion, the balaclava, the Zischägge and the Cabasset (or Birnhelm).
In the 19th century, among other things, the spiked helmet. It developed, also by the advancement in the weapon technology, the steel helmet, which prevailed world-wide.
